Semantic Markdown
Markdown that people and AI agents both read well. Callouts, decisions, risks, tasks and diagrams, validated, with an agent view that skips the decoration.
spec v2, stable MIT Node.js 22+
Semantic Markdown (.smd) is Markdown plus a small, validated vocabulary (:::warning, :::decision, :::risk, tasks with owners and due dates, Mermaid diagrams, :::agent instructions) with a CLI, a VS Code extension, an MCP server and agent skills that let an agent read only what it needs.
Edit a document and see the preview, the agent view with its token count, the problems and the Markdown export side by side. Nothing to install, nothing sent to a server.
Install
/plugin marketplace add bislink360/semantic-markdown
/plugin install semantic-markdown@semantic-markdown
The two agent skills (reading and writing .smd) and the MCP server, in one plugin. Or set up one project with npx semantic-markdown init --agent claude.
npx semantic-markdown init --agent cursor # or copilot, agents
Writes the rules file, the CLI at .smd/smd.cjs, the MCP server config and the AGENTS.md snippet into the project.
Search for Semantic Markdown in the Extensions view, or:
code --install-extension bislink360.semantic-markdown
Cursor, VSCodium and Windsurf: install the .vsix from the latest release until the Open VSX listing is live.
npm install -g semantic-markdown # the smd command
smd validate docs/
The same package is a zero-dependency library (renderSmd, validateSmd, agentView) with markdown-it, remark and rehype plugins.
Until the registry listings are live, every GitHub release has the .vsix, the npm package and the skills: see the install guide.

For AI agents
- One read, fewer tokens.
smd read spec.smdreturns the whole agent view when it is small, else an outline to pick sections from. Measured: the full agent view is 5–37% smaller than the file on the examples,--brief14–43%, and the outline plus one section about 80% smaller on 6k–8k-token documents. Small documents are cheaper to read directly. - Meaning is explicit. An agent can tell an accepted decision from a proposal, a hard constraint from a side note, and its own instructions (
:::agent) from content for people. - A work queue.
smd tasks docs/lists open tasks across documents, overdue first; the MCP server can check them off when you allow it. - A gate.
smd validatecatches broken syntax, links and diagrams in CI, with fixes an agent can apply.
For docs-as-code teams
- Every
.mdfile is already valid Semantic Markdown: rename it and add structure where it helps. smd export --to mdwrites plain GitHub Markdown, smd builda static site, and the GitHub Action annotates problems on pull requests.- Spec v2 is stable: documents written today keep their meaning in every 2.x release.
